In Woodland, the County Fair is just about the biggest thing going all year long.

And because it is such a big deal - I have added a page for the 2005 fair. Check it out.

This year they added Ewoks to the list of animals displayed.

This was the 'answer person' Johanna Oliver. She really did have all of the answers, and was very polite and nice.

Her angus steer weighed in at about 1,350 pounds (not the one in the picture). She can expect to get 45 cents to 2 dollars per pound. The steers are slaughtered at 18 months.

Ruby Morales and Guadalupe Sanchez from FFA.

"Bubba"

Poster child for the 2004 Yolo County Fair.

The little cows are cute. Just don't mention the word 'veal'.

Chickens, turkeys, rabbits and catfish were in this building.

I have no idea what that thing is---->
O r what it is supposed to be.
But it is pretty darn interesting.

Lots of bread, cakes, pies, cookies, etc. This was a great looking assortement.

Unfortunately, I did not get to sample these.

This cake was in the junior division!

Artwork in the fine arts building.

I've been coming to the fair for quite a few years, and I never even knew there was a 'fine arts building' until a friend mentioned it to me this year. They've got a fairly large display, and a silent auction. The fine arts building is
located between the junior crafts building, and exhibition building.

If you are over 16, the midway is neither cheap, nor easy. But at least it corrals all of
the teenagers in one area.

This would make me sick.

Each one of these outfits was carefully chosen...I'll bet at least
an hour was put into make it 'just right' for opening night.

Actually that is his whole arm. Carny's just have small hands.

I remember winning a gold fish at the carnival at school in
4th grade. I had to carry the damn thing around. Finally I
threw it away when I won a chocolate cake in the cakewalk.
(Suddenly I had better stuff to do)

But on the other hand...what the hell do they expect a
4th grader to do with an entire cake? I shared it with one of
my friends, and we got sent home because we were such
a mess afterwards. And besides, I'm sure the teacher
didn't want to deal with two 10 year olds who just
each ate 1/2 of a cake.

Lots and lots of people at the fair.

Everyone comes with friends.

Damn teenagers!

Paris Hilton visits the Yolo County fair- and eats a chocolate fudge sundae.

This is part of the line for the tacos I don't think are all that great.
See below for some much better tacos...

I love this corn. Too bad it is so darn hot when it comes off the fire!
On Sunday, their 'toppings' (spices, salt, etc) are so clumped together
that it is impossible to use them sparingly. While I do like cayanne
pepper, my corn was just completely covered with it. After eating it my lips
burned so much that I had to get a 'cheesecake on a stick'.

These guys are from La Fogata. They serve the best tacos at the fair. I have no idea
why so many people like those other tacos (over under the shade structure
out of a permanent building- picture above). These are much better- the barbacoa tacos
are very, very good.

In the Exposition hall, there are lot of businesses who want to hand
out information. These two (Karla Lindstrom and Jo Mello) were extremely
helpful.

Yes- this really is Elvis!

Bo, Luke and Cooter gettin' ready for some big fun here.

Below are pictures of the gardens that are set up. There's a big area that has about 20 little mini gardens- each one created by a different group. Usually they are pretty interesting- maybe you'll get some ideas for your own yard, maybe not.
But if you want to see this, you really need to come on the first day- they get pretty wilted by Sunday if it is hot out. And I can't
think of when it wouldn't be hot in August.

I think that the Yolo County Master Gardeners might be in charge of this, but I'm not sure.
(Hey YCMG- where is your website?)

Hey- this isn't a sherrif- this goes one better. He is part of the posse. How many people who are NOT on MTV can legitimately say they are in a posse? Not many. Well, Steve Locke (pictured) was kind enough to tell us all about the posse and what they do. This is straight from the flyer he gave me:

The Yolo County Sheriff's Posse is a non-profit organization of non-sworn volunteers and privately owned horses... (oh...they ride horses!) ...governed through the Sheriff's Office to assist in search and rescue, times of disaster and to promote goodwill among residents of the county.

Okay- so they won't go out chasing bandits or anything, but the search and rescue sounds cool, and they do it from horses.

To be in this posse, you need to be:

  • Citizen of the United States
  • At least 18 years old
  • Able to pass a background investigation
  • Have a California drivers license
  • Graduate high school, or have a GED
  • Maintain CPR and First Aid certification
  • Attain certification for self and equine (does your horse need to know CPR?)
  • Attend search and rescue training, monthly business meetings and monthly horse training
  • Able to conform to the policies and procedures of the Sheriff's Department
  • And- it costs $50 per year

You know, if MC Hammer had charged $50 to get into his posse, he probably wouldn't have gone bankrupt. But really, this sounds like a good deal if you are looking for something good to do on your horse. If you're interested, contact the Sheriff's Volunteer Coordinator- they'll give you all the info you need to know.

If I saw this in my garden, I would probably shoot it.

There is much more to see! Take a look at the 2005 fair!
