What is this website all about?
The whole purpose of this website is to give the people of Woodland,
Ca a place to read and write about their town and what it means to live
here. It's to show some of the interesting things you might come across
in your daily life. It's not a 'news' site, and it's not about any particular
people. To some people, a website about Woodland doesn't sound that
interesting. But to the 55,000 of us who live here, it is a website
about what we might run across in our daily lives.
We can watch TV, or read the newspaper to find out what is going on
all around the world. But I spend most of my time right here in Woodland.
I want to know what's going on in my town. I like to think that the
guy who just sold me tacos has a much greater impact on my life than
anyone Sam Donaldson wants to tell me about.
What can I do here?
Well, you can start out by reading! (for some of you,
that might just mean lookin' at the purty pictures- that's okay too).
There are plenty of stories to read, so go
ahead and dive right in.
Also, it's not just about reading, it's about commenting.
At the bottom of each story is a 'comments' section. Scroll to the bottom
of this page to see an example. Feel free to let us know what you think
about the stories, or interact with your fellow Woodlanders. Think of
it as one of those letters to the editor in the Daily Democrat- except
it is instantaneous. And you don't have to be shy- in fact you can be
anonymous! If you have something to say- go ahead and say it, nobody
will now who you are (unless you tell them).
Can I put something on the Events Calendar?
Yes- by all means do it. And it is very easy. Click on 'Events' on
the right hand side of the red bar at the top of any page (including
this one). When you see the calendar, on the upper right hand corner
there is an 'Add Event' graphic. Click that- then fill out the form.
That's it.
But what should go on the calendar? Pretty much any event that has
an appeal to people throughout the city. High School events yes- but
your kids pee-wee football game, no. Your club's pancake breakfast,
yes- your club board meeting, no.
You should write an article about this, or
that.
You're right- we should. But it isn't always possible. For instance,
recently someone asked why most of the articles are about things that
happen on the East side of town. And could we write more about the West
side? Well, I live on the East side- so that's what I know about.
Suggestions for stories are fine. But chances are, if you are making
the suggestion, you know more about the subject than I do. An informed
article you write is better than what I would come up with...although
that hasn't stopped me yet.
Credit Where Credit is Due
The font I use throughout the site is 'Edmunds Distressed' which is
available from Larabie
Fonts. I also used a few other fonts for certain icons you see on
the site. Larabie Fonts is a great. Many of the story graphics were
created by Valerie Griffith, at Griffmobile.
