Attention: While the 2003 parade was fantastic- don't miss our coverage of 2004! The Chistmas Parade is one of the big events of the year in Woodland. This year it was held on December 13th, on a cold day with a light rain. There were lots of Krispy Kreme donuts for sale, as well as hot chocolate, and coffee. The parade started at about 10:00 and ran for about an hour. If you've got comments, make sure you leave them at the bottom of the page!
Start of the Parade
Cleaning up after the lady on the horse- and the horse.
We won't ask if you won't tell.
Mein mayor
Old Fire Truck Pioneer High School Pioneer High School had a really odd exhibition. A bunch of elves dressed in black, and then a trailer with a bunch of boxes that had spray painting on them. A spectacular entry that should win some sort of award. I really expected something like Animal House, maybe the Deathmobile would come driving out, and Bluto would come swinging off the roof or something.
Representing the new high school.
Other Floats
Funky Little Float
Every event in the Central Valley has machines like this. But this is the biggest I have ever seen. Shriners Different guys wearing funny hats. This float had some dude rockin the caliope.
These Shriner clowns were pretty good. The guy on the scooter didn't fall at all, and cowboy was a good dancer. There was a gang of about 15 old guys on go-carts going up and down the street. The engines were pretty loud, so it sounded like a biker gang.
The Shriners, like the Rangers, never leave one of their own behind. This guy broke down and had to get towed. Sierra Outlaws Sierra Outlaws - these guys really were cool. They did a little gunfight in the street, etc. But more than anything else, they looked good.
Happy Shiny People
Battle of the Bands There were two school bands that I saw, Woodland and Gilmore. The mighty combined bands of Woodland were the hometown favorites, the band included Woodland High School, Pioneer High School, Douglass Middle School, and Lee Middle School. For this parade they opted to wear black pants, white shirts, and garbage bags. The sound of the plastic rippling in the wind was absolutely stunning.
Gilmore on the other hand didn't show nearly as much creativity. All of the band members were dressed the same! Ha! They also stood in straight lines, and walked in unison! I though that music was all about creativity, and self expression. Someone needs to tell Gilmore Middle School what being a marching band is really all about.
Animals Three things are required for a parade: old guys in hats, kids who are tired and hungry, and animals. We had them all.
Horses
Cleaning up after the horses. You can see through the wheelbarrow- they've been busy.
This was a dancing horse- probably listens better than my dog.
If the dog was the hungry one, I would donate.
